Dry Conduits and Numerical Water

This section applies to MIKE+ type setups, where a bottom slot is not applied.

The 1D engine will not allow the water depth in reaches to become zero. If parts of the network are close to drying out, then the 1D engine maintains a minimum water depth in those parts, that by default is 5‰ of the characteristic dimension of the conduit (diameter for circular pipes), or Max. 5 mm. This is necessary in order to maintain numerical stability in the solution of the flow equations.

This correction practically means artificial generation of water, i.e. some water volume is added to the system. As a consequence of that, the continuity status report shown does not give a fair impression of the accuracy of the simulation. The amount of water added due to drying out of reaches is normally referred to as numerical water.
